Air Fryer Sweet Potato Wedges
I started making these sweet potato wedges when I was trying to eat a little more fibre, now they have become my go-to side dish.
In my opinion, these air fryer sweet potato wedges are genuinely better than regular chips. The natural sweetness of the potato caramelises in the air fryer, the spiced seasoning adds warmth and depth. I actually prefer them now - and I say that as someone who makes roast potatoes every week.
In our house this has become my Friday night treat alongside a burger while the rest of the family has their normal chips. I still can't persuade the family to give up their normal chips - all the more for me!
Ready in 15 minutes, high in fibre, genuinely delicious and a brilliant alternative to regular chips. Once you try them this way you'll wonder why you ever did anything else with a sweet potato.
Why You'll Love This Recipe
- Ready in 15 minutes
Straight into the air fryer - just seasoning, oil and 15 minutes. One of the fastest side dishes you can make.
- Actually crispy
The air fryer caramelises the natural sugars in the sweet potato and crisps the edges in a way the oven simply can't match.
- Packed with flavour
Salt flakes, garlic powder, chilli flakes and dried parsley, the seasoning transforms this simple sweet potato. The chilli warmth against the natural sweetness of the potato is a brilliant combination.
- A lighter alternative to regular fries
Sweet potatoes are higher in fibre and Vitamin A than regular potatoes, making these a genuinely nutritious side dish.
- Versatile
Brilliant alongside a burger, with grilled chicken, as a snack with dipping sauce or as a side dish for almost anything. Sour cream and chive dip is our favourite accompaniment, the cool creaminess against the spiced crispy fries is a match made in heaven.
- No air fryer? No problem
These work in the oven too - 220°C for 25-30 minutes on a baking tray, turning halfway. Not quite as crispy but still absolutely delicious.
4 Servings 15 Minutes
Ingredients
- Black Pepper - 1/2 tsp
- Chilli Powder - 1/2 tsp
- Dried Parsley - 1 tsp
- Garlic Granules - 1 tsp
- Olive Oil - 2 tbsp
- Salt Flakes - 1 tsp
- Small Sweet Potato - 4
Method
- Prep the sweet potatoes: Peel 4 small sweet potatoes and cut into even sized fries, aim for roughly 1cm thickness. Try to keep them as uniform as possible so they cook evenly. Pat dry with kitchen paper to remove any excess moisture.
- Season: Place the fries in a large bowl. Drizzle over 2 tablespoons olive oil and toss to coat. Add all of the seasonings and toss again until every fry is evenly coated.
- Air fry: Preheat your air fryer to 210°C. Add the fries in a single layer - don't overcrowd the basket or they'll steam rather than crisp. Cook for 15 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through. They are ready when the edges are caramelised and crispy.
- Serve: Serve immediately - these are best eaten straight from the air fryer while they're still crispy.
Hints and Tips
- Don't overcrowd the basket
This is the golden rule of air fryer cooking. If the fries are piled on top of each other they'll steam rather than crisp. Cook in two batches if needed - it's worth the extra few minutes for properly crispy results.
- Pat them dry
After cutting, pat the fries dry with kitchen paper to remove any surface moisture.
- Cut evenly
Try to keep the fries as uniform as possible, roughly 1cm thickness. Uneven pieces will cook at different rates, leaving some perfect and some overdone.
- Use salt flakes
Salt flakes rather than fine table salt make a noticeable difference to the texture and flavour. Maldon is our go-to, a little goes a long way and the crunch of the flakes against the crispy fries is really satisfying.
- Eat immediately
Sweet potato fries will soften as they cool so serve straight from the air fryer. If you need to keep them warm, a 2-3 minute blast back in the air fryer at the same temperature will bring the crispiness back.
- The perfect dip
Sour cream and chive is the ultimate partner for these fries, the cool, creamy tang against the spiced crispy sweet potato is a brilliant combination. Alternatively try sriracha mayo for an extra kick.
